Start with what daily life feels like

You may have a name for what you are experiencing, or you may only know that you have not felt like yourself. When you speak with a clinician, explain what has changed and how it affects your day. Changes in mood, relationships, sleep, or your ability to manage responsibilities can help guide that conversation.

An assessment helps clarify your concerns and the care to consider. If you are unsure what to request when you call, ask the front desk about getting started.

Compare counseling and psychiatric care

Individual counseling gives you a one-to-one setting with a therapist. CFSS also offers family counseling when concerns involve family relationships and you want to explore them together.

Psychiatric services include evaluations and medication management. An evaluation helps the provider understand your concerns and recommend care; medication management provides ongoing review of a prescribed medication. You can ask how counseling and psychiatric care may fit your needs.

Choose an office visit or ask about telehealth

CFSS offers adult counseling and psychiatric services through its Reading and Pottsville offices. Both service types are available by telehealth, and you must be in Pennsylvania during each remote appointment. Initial psychiatric evaluations typically take place in person.

Spanish-speaking staff and interpreters are available for outpatient and psychiatric services at both offices. For Spanish-language new-client assistance, call Reading.

If attending an office is difficult, ask about care at home

CFSS's Mobile Mental Health Treatment program provides in-home individual or family therapy for eligible adults ages 21 and older in Berks and Schuylkill counties. Psychiatric services and medication management are provided by telehealth.

Eligibility depends on an assessment of medical necessity, including barriers that impair or prevent participation in clinic-based outpatient care. You can call CFSS yourself to ask about the program, or a therapist or another agency can make a referral.

Call an office to begin the referral

Call the Reading or Pottsville office. The front desk completes the referral with you. Calling ahead is preferred; walk-ins are accepted for intake assessments, while psychiatric visits require an appointment.

Ask staff to check your insurance coverage for the service you need. If you plan to pay yourself, call for current rates.
