Psychiatric evaluations for children, teens, and adults

If you are considering psychiatric care for yourself or your child, you may have questions about the first appointment, medication, or which provider you will see. CFSS provides psychiatric evaluations and medication management for ages 5 and older, with in-person and telehealth services. Initial psychiatric evaluations typically take place in person.

An evaluation helps clarify your mental health needs

A psychiatric evaluation considers your mental health concerns in the context of your health and history. It helps the provider understand what you are experiencing and recommend a treatment plan.

Use the appointment to explain your concerns and ask what the recommendation means for you. If you have questions about medication, including whether it may be useful, bring them into that discussion.

Know who you will see and how the visit will happen

CFSS psychiatrists see clients by telehealth. A certified registered nurse practitioner, or CRNP, provides in-person care at the office. Ask staff which provider and appointment format will apply to your visit.

Initial psychiatric evaluations typically take place in person. You must be in Pennsylvania during any telehealth appointment.

Bring your questions about care for a child or teen

If you are arranging care for a child or teen, ask staff how consent, privacy, and caregiver involvement apply to their age and situation. You can also ask what information to bring and how recommendations will be explained.

Follow-up care can include medication management

CFSS provides ongoing medication management after an evaluation. Follow-up visits review how a prescribed medication is working, any side effects, and whether the treatment plan needs to change.

Our medication management page explains the questions you can bring to those visits and what to discuss with your provider.

Spanish-language support is available

One CFSS psychiatrist is bilingual. Both offices have Spanish-speaking staff and interpreters for psychiatric services. For a new appointment in Spanish, call the Reading office, which handles Spanish-language new-client calls for both offices.

Scheduling a psychiatric appointment

Psychiatric appointments are scheduled by phone. Walk-ins are not available for psychiatric services; walk-in visits are for intake assessments only.

Call the Reading or Pottsville office. Ask what information to bring and how to confirm coverage for your appointment.
